The Collegiate Academy team is based at Mira Costa Community College (MCC). Up to 20 players are selected for this team, which compete in the Gold Coast Conference Division 1. The National title is yet to be determined.
The players selected for this team receive the following:
Monthly 1:1 film study with a SD Legion coach; and 1 weekend skill session with a SD Legion coach
San Diego Legion Pre-season
Bi-monthly practices with the SD Legion squad, including strength and conditioning sessions, film review, unit work and full team sessions.
MCC Regular Season
Personalized development plan including academics, professional career goals, mental skills, nutritional guidance and rugby pathway
Strength and conditioning sessions with SD Legion strength and conditioning coach
Meet with SD Legion Academy Director monthly to track progress
- Each player will get a personal academic counselor to help guide educational goal for students wanting to transfer or play at higher level after Mira Costa
Additionally, participating players will assist SD Legion staff during Major League Rugby home games and get a behind-the-scenes look on how a professional sports team operates.

Keli Ross-Ma’u, known as Coach Keli, has founded several youth to college rugby programs and currently is the head coach of both the Men’s and Women’s Rugby program at MiraCosta College. He has led numerous teams to Southern California championships and a National Championship in 2018 for MiraCosta. Coach Keli’s work with youth rugby was recognized nationally by being awarded the USA Rugby Participation Coach of The Year Award in 2016.
At a foundational level Coach Keli believes in the power of community, and in the principle that people achieve more when they feel a sense of belonging. He has modeled and continuously advocates for more access to participation at all levels of rugby, especially those that may not have the resources, transportation, or general support to participate.
Outside of rugby, Coach Keli is the founder and executive director of Kainga Music, a non-profit music school primarily focused on the steel pan. He is also the counselor/co-coordinator for the Mana program at MiraCosta which serves Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander students. Coach Keli believes that community and a sense of belonging is essential, and he is committed to creating, uniting, and building communities wherever he is.
