Legion Academy Begins 2026/27 Development Program

Legion Academy officially began its 2026/27 development program on Sunday, September 20, bringing U16 and U18 players from across Southern California together for the first session of the Fall training block.

Led by Legion Academy Director Dave Clancy, the opening session concentrated on the fundamentals that underpin long-term player development, including catch-pass, defensive tracking, ball carry and ground work.

Players were challenged to execute those skills under pressure and with accuracy and intent, while also beginning to establish the standards expected throughout the Academy: effort, accountability, coachability, consistency and respect for teammates, coaches and the game.

The session also provided a full-circle moment for the Academy when graduate Solomon Williams returned to join the coaching group.

Williams spoke with players about his own pathway through Legion Academy before progressing to Cal Rugby and the USA U20 and U23 programs.

His involvement reflected an important part of the Academy’s development philosophy: helping young athletes not only improve as rugby players, but also understand and navigate the opportunities available to them through rugby, education and higher-level competition.

Fall development pathway

The Academy training group continues through October with open development sessions before transitioning to an invite-only squad in November.

The next open session will take place on October 18, followed by invite-only sessions on November 1, 8 and 15, all held at LCCHS.

As the program progresses, training will move toward higher-level tactical and positional development, supported by experienced coaches with professional playing and coaching backgrounds.

Selection throughout the term is based on training consistency, attendance, coachability, attitude, work ethic, performance and progression, with development remaining the central purpose of Legion Academy.

The U18 group is also preparing for an international tour to England and Wales over Thanksgiving, featuring high-level opposition, university visits and exposure to one of the world’s leading rugby environments.
