Nadroga Navosa Provincial College 31 – 23 Legion Academy U18s

Lawaqa Stadium | Sigatoka, Fiji

The Legion Academy U18 Boys continued their international tour with a memorable match against the Nadroga Navosa Provincial College side at historic Lawaqa Stadium in Sigatoka, Fiji. In front of a packed crowd of passionate local supporters and traveling Legion families, the American side showcased physicality, discipline, and resilience before ultimately falling 31-23 in a hard-fought contest.

Playing two 35-minute halves, the Legion boys came out energized by the unique experience of running through the stadium tunnel and competing in front of one of the most rugby-passionate crowds in the world.

Legion Controls First Half

Legion struck first just over five minutes into the match when tighthead prop Patrick Knight (#3) powered over from close range following a sustained goal-line assault. The score was the result of a well-executed "Latch Plus" forward-driving sequence after a lineout deep inside Fijian territory. Flyhalf Gavin Dauod added the conversion to give Legion an early 7-0 lead.

At the 13-minute mark, Legion extended the advantage when center Maverick DeClark (#13) calmly slotted a long-range penalty goal. The kick struck the upright before bouncing through, drawing cheers from both sidelines and pushing the lead to 10-0.

The Fijians responded midway through the half, capitalizing on a turnover before moving the ball wide and finishing in the corner. A successful conversion cut the deficit to 10-7.

Legion answered immediately with a moment of rugby intelligence rarely seen at the youth level. Spotting an opportunity, Gavin Dauod (#12) successfully executed a drop goal, adding three points and demonstrating the Legion side's growing rugby IQ.

Nadroga Navosa again fought back with another opportunistic try after quick offloads and broken-field play reduced the margin to one point.

Before halftime, Legion winger Luke Hensley (#7) delivered another big play. Running a powerful crash line off the wing, Hensley finished a well-worked attack to score under pressure. Dauod converted from a difficult angle to give Legion a 20-12 halftime lead.

Despite holding the advantage, the Americans knew the challenge was far from over.

Fiji Responds in the Second Half

The match turned early in the second half when the home side capitalized on momentum and the energy of the packed Lawaqa Stadium crowd, scoring shortly after the restart to narrow the deficit.

Gavin Dauod added another penalty goal to extend Legion's lead to 23-17, but the Fijians continued to apply relentless pressure. Their dangerous open field running and ability to turn possession into scoring opportunities eventually shifted the match in their favor.

Nadroga Navosa Provincial College struck with two converted second-half tries before adding a final score in the closing moments to secure a 31-23 victory.

While the scoreboard favored the hosts, the contest remained highly competitive throughout. Legion matched the Fijians physically for long stretches and demonstrated significant growth against a rugby culture renowned worldwide for producing dynamic, skillful, and physical players.

More Than a Rugby Match

Following the final whistle, the true spirit of rugby was on full display.

Players from both teams gathered together at midfield, locking arms and sharing traditional Fijian songs and hymns in a powerful display of respect and friendship. Gifts were exchanged between the teams, and many Legion players went a step further, removing their own boots, scrum caps, jackets, and jerseys to present to their Fijian counterparts.

For many of the Fijian players, access to rugby equipment can be limited, making the gestures especially meaningful.

"It feels good as a coach and as a player to give back," said Head Coach Dan DeClark. "The hospitality we received here was incredible. The boys didn't just see another culture - they experienced it firsthand."

Coach's Perspective

DeClark praised both teams for embracing a difficult challenge.

"In honor and integrity, you don't choose a weaker opponent," said DeClark. "Neither team chose a weak opponent. This was a physical rugby match with talent on both sides."

He also emphasized the long-term value of the tour experience.

"These opportunities help develop true rugby players. The boys are taking these experiences back to their clubs and communities. They're raising the standard of American rugby."

Looking Ahead

While the result did not go Legion's way, the match represented exactly what international rugby tours are designed to achieve - high-level competition, cultural immersion, personal growth, and lifelong memories.

The Legion Academy U18s leave Fiji stronger, more connected, and better prepared for the next chapter of their rugby journeys.
